Madison, Wisconsin (July 19, 2025): Good evening, esteemed members, honored guests, and distinguished dignitaries. It is with great pride and a sense of responsibility that I present the North America Sukuta Association, NASUA’s State of the Association Address for the year 2025.  I would like to extend a warm welcome to our distinguished guests who have joined us for this special occasion. Your presence here is a testament to the importance of our collective mission, and we are grateful for your support.

I would also like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful host city for its warm welcome and generous hospitality. The resources they have placed at our disposal have made this gathering not only possible but also a memorable experience for all of us. Thank you for embracing us with open arms.

This gathering is not only a celebration of our collective achievements over the past year but also a moment to reflect on our challenges, envision future opportunities, and reaffirm our commitment to the mission of NASUA. Together, we have embarked on a journey of compassion, resilience, and hope. Our mission to uplift our community members in the United States and The Gambia is not just a goal; it is a calling that resonates deeply within each of us.

Our Achievements

As we reflect on our achievements over the past year, I am filled with immense pride. Thanks to your unwavering support and dedication, we have made significant strides in our mission.

Membership Outreach

Our membership has grown from 35 in 2016 when NASUA was formed, to 146 in 2025, reflecting an increase of more than nine times the original number. This substantial growth signifies the trust and value that our community places in our work.

NASUA President, Mrs. Oumie Cham-Touray delivered the SOA Reports

 Community Development Projects:

We undertook several successful initiatives, including member welfare programs that provided $2,232 hardship relief assistance to several members in mitigating their personal, health, and legal challenges.

Our “Sadaqa” programs have not only enhanced access to health treatments but also support the efforts of family members in providing their loved ones with dignified funeral services.

Our unique development fund initiative is a promise that enjoins us to commit $30 of each member’s annual subscriptions, exclusively to support community development projects taking place in Sukuta. This year, we disbursed $1,792.50 towards the Sukuta Multi-purpose Center project and expended $4,791.70 in charitable donations for various community engagements.

Partnerships: We have strengthened our partnerships with key organizations and stakeholders, including The Gambia Tourism Board, The Plotz Foundation, and our sister organizations of Kombo Yiriwa Kafo, and the North America Gunjur Association, NAGUA. These partnerships allow us to expand our reach and enhance our offerings. Our commitment to these partnerships is evident in their presence and contributions to the successful organization of our event tonight.

Finances:  Financially, our revenue has decreased from $26,928.73 in 2023 to $25,946.91for the year ending December 31, 2024, representing a 3.65 percent decrease. This is largely due to a drop in key revenue sources, such as membership fees, sponsorships, and grants. In contrast, our expenditure increased from $22,194.19 in 2023 to $23,367.98 in 2024, representing a 5.29 percent increase. Our charitable causes largely account for the increase in expenditure. However, the cash balance of $19,224.09carried over from the previous year resulted in a cash asset of $21,803.02carried over to the 2025 financial year.

The historical financial records of the Association from 2016 to the fiscal year ending December 31st, 2024, showed that our charitable expenditure in the United States totaled $45,343.85while our support for The Gambia amounted to $31,511.80.

Ladies and gentlemen, talking about our finances, we have maintained a prudent approach to spending, resulting in cash assets that we can reinvest into our programs and initiatives. Our financial health allows us to continue providing valuable services to our members while ensuring the sustainability of our association for years to come.

Challenges: However, as we celebrate our successes, we must also acknowledge the challenges we face. The landscape in which we operate is rapidly changing, with economic downturns, shifts in members’ subscriptions, and donor/sponsor fatigue. These challenges require us to be agile and innovative, adapting our strategies to meet the evolving demands of our members and the broader community.  Opportunities: Yet, where there are challenges, there are also opportunities. We have the chance to leverage technology to enhance our engagement and outreach. The rise of digital platforms offers us new ways to connect with members and donors, share knowledge, and promote our initiatives. Moreover, we are exploring potential investment opportunities that could further expand our impact and resources.

Financial Outlook: As we look ahead, it is essential to address our financial outlook. While we have made remarkable progress, our funding has been challenged. We are committed to transparency and accountability, and I assure you that every dollar raised is utilized efficiently to maximize our impact. In the coming year, we aim to diversify our funding sources by applying for grants, engaging in corporate sponsorships, and expanding our individual donor base.

Our goal is to increase our annual budget by 25% to support our growing initiatives and ensure that we can meet the rising demand for our services.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of you. Your commitment, passion, and generosity are the lifeblood of the North America Sukuta Association. Together, we have the power to change lives, uplift communities, and create a brighter future for those who need it most.

As we embark on this journey into the new year, I want to introduce an important concept that can elevate our association to new heights: the idea of every NASUA member being a 'brand promoter' of NASUA. It is essential that each of us actively represents our association, whether at our workplaces, community events, or even within local charitable organizations. We have a unique and powerful mission that deserves to be shared widely. Every interaction presents an opportunity: to engage potential members, to advocate for our initiatives, and to foster a deeper understanding of what NASUA stands for.

I encourage you all to embrace this role wholeheartedly. Share your experiences, speak passionately about our achievements, and communicate the impact of our work within your networks. By doing so, you are not just promoting NASUA; you are contributing to a legacy that influences positive change and uplifts our communities. Let us continue to work hand in hand, with the conviction that together, we can overcome any challenge and seize every opportunity that lies ahead. Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to our mission.

We Are Sukuta: A Poetic Tribute at 2025 NASUA AGM

We Are Sukuta

Bold and free

We’ve journeyed far, but never apart
From every state, with Sukuta in our heart

One Gambia, one nation

Not just a place but a living flame
That calls through our blood

that shapes our name

Sukuta, Demba Doo, where legends are made

Where legends are raised

Sukuta Demba Doo, where legends are born
Sabiji, where strength outshines the blade

The land of gardens, of hands that sow
Where hard work is stitched in all we know

Our mothers woke with baskets high
Turning sweat and hope into lullabies
They moved like prayer through morning light

through morning light, they move like prayer
With courage quiet, but burning bright

but burning bright with courage quiet

Our fathers rose with earth-stained hands Rooted deep in Kombo sands

the Bojangs, the Mannehs, the Cham Demba’s pride Nyancho souls who never hide

We are the children of Manding king

Sankarang warriors born to win

Though scattered wide, we are still one

Bound by the soil, the stars, the sun, the moon, the ocean

This gathering isn’t chance or show

But the rhythm of a people who always grow From Texas heat to New York streets

From Georgia’s breeze to LA beats

We come as one, from far and near

from far and near, We come as one

as one Gambia, one nation

To say: Sukuta lives in us, right here in Madcity

And let us not forget our neighbors

the triple B-Sateeba(Brikama, Bakau, Brufut)

our friend, Gunjur

Our neighbor whose laughter will never end

We tease, we jest, like kin we spar

But stand side by side, wherever we are

From wrestling boasts to playful fights

We share the sun, the rain, the nights

For Sukuta and Gunjur, come joy or strife

Are two strong hearts, beating one life

And now in Madison

NASUA proudly stands

NASUA proudly stands

in Madcity Midwestern heart, Kombo in hand

A city hosting our laughter and tears

As we honor our roots and cherish our years

So raise your voices, let drums resound

Let the sounds of balafon resound

Let every Sukutarian joy be found

Let every Gambian joy be found

May our children know, and theirs believe

In a town whose spirit will never leave

We are Sukuta, one Gambia! Bold and freeeee

A village, a kingdom, a legacy

Together we rise, together we stay

The heart of Kombo, come what may.

HELP OUR CAUSE: NASUA SEEKS DONATIONS OF MEDICAL RESOURCES

Sukuta Health Center Maternity Block

Sukuta Health Center Infant Care Shed

Sukuta Health Center Maternity Block

Atlanta: We are making significant strides toward providing qualitative and enduring healthcare service delivery for the people of Sukuta. The current health center was built in 1987, replacing a dilapidated health post/dispensary that outlived its purpose.

With increased population and urbanization, the health center's facilities and resources are overwhelmed, resulting in overcrowded rooms, inadequate supplies, and high referrals to Banjul and Kanifing major hospitals. In particular, the labor ward has limited capacity to cope with delivery and postnatal demands, viz., the lack of equipment and insufficient sanitary and bedding supplies.

The status quo is deemed unsustainable because of our belief that health is a right.
